The master program of "Municipal Engineering" was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the Ministry of Education in 2006, and the first class of postgraduates were enrolled in 2007. In 2018, it was approved as a doctoral authorization program (affiliated to the first-level discipline doctoral program in Civil Engineering). The annual enrollment of graduate students is about 20.

Municipal Engineering is mainly engaged in the water quality treatment and reuse of urban and industrial water supply and sewage; the evaluation, development, utilization and protection of water resources; the optimization of water supply and drainage pipe network system; the treatment, disposal and recycling of municipal solid waste; etc. It has formed research characteristics in the fields of water quality improvement and water treatment of algal-laden water sources, municipal sewage treatment technology and industrial wastewater treatment technology, and some fields have reached the international leading level.

Municipal Engineering program has 13 master supervisors and 3 doctoral supervisors, among whom 5 have senior titles, 4 have deputy senior titles, and 7 have international study or visiting experience. The institute has a 3000m2 laboratory, more than 600 sets of scientific research instruments and equipment, with a total asset of more than 20 million RMB, and the Jiangsu Provincial Water Environment Protection Technology and Equipment Engineering Laboratory. The degree program has exchange and cooperation with universities in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries.

In the past five years, the discipline has undertaken more than 70 scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, and the Science and Technology Support Plan. The annual scientific research fund is more than 3 million RMB. More than 50 research papers have been published, more than 20 invention patents have been authorized, and 2 provincial scientific research awards have been awarded.
